What causes burning during urination — can it happen without an infection?

Urinary tract infection is the most common cause. Sensitivity to irritant hygiene products, some sexually transmitted infections, prostatitis, bladder stones or inflammatory bladder conditions can also cause burning. If fever, flank pain or blood in the urine accompanies it, prompt assessment is needed.
