Are cystitis and a kidney infection the same thing?

No. Cystitis is a lower urinary tract infection that usually affects the bladder. A kidney infection, or pyelonephritis, can follow a more serious course and may present with fever, chills, flank pain, nausea, vomiting, and feeling generally unwell. If these symptoms are present, prompt medical evaluation is necessary.
